Astronomy
Astronomy is the oldest and the most fascinating of sciences. People have enjoyed and looked in wonder at the night sky since before the dawn of civilization.
One of the best things about astronomy is that it can be enjoyed at many different levels. This means that anyone, include you, can be an astronomer. Astronomy can be a very rewarding hobby and is a fantastic way of enriching your life.
Even if you simply want to enjoy the spectacle of the night sky, you are still an astronomer. To get started, you need no equipment other than your eyes. Away from the city lights, the night sky is simply awe-inspiring. But the moment you first look at the night sky through binoculars is a true revelation.
You Can be as Serious as You Want
If you want the opportunity to make a serious contribution to science then you need look no further. Astronomy is the last science where amateurs can and do work in tandem with professionals. Detections of supernovae by amateur astronomers are routinely followed up with detailed observations by professional astronomers. Amateur astronomers also discover novae, comets and asteroids on a regular basis.
Most astronomers follow a line somewhere between “casual” and “serious” observing. For some stargazing becomes a huge passion. Others are happy observing with a pair of good binoculars. There is something for everyone.
So why don’t you join us on a journey to the stars? It’s your universe - enjoy it!
