The Solar System

The Solar System is our home and it is certainly one we can be proud to live in.

The Solar System consists of our star the Sun, which is orbited by the planets and their satellites, comets, Kuiper belt objects, the asteroids and dust. Many solar system objects can be seen with the naked eye and have been studied since ancient times.

The Earth and the Moon

More recently, space probes have been sent out into the Solar System and have made close up investigations of the planets.

We now have a greater appreciation of the enormous diversity of the objects in the Solar System - every planet and satellite is a different and unique world. There are the rocky terrestrial type planets like Venus and the beautiful gas giants like Jupiter. Further out lay the Comets of the Oort Cloud.
